I've got a 3750 that I'm using for performance testing. I'm seeing that the throughput with 8996 size MTU frames is in the 900Mbps ranges. The throughtput with 1496 size MTU frames is in the low 700Mbps range. With a 4006 I don't get this low performance on 1496 size MTU frames. The CPU is 4% before running the performance excerciser. During the Performance run the CPU is 5%.
The ability of the various Catalyst switches to be able to support various frame sizes depends on many factors, including the hardware and software. Note that certain modules may be able to support larger frame sizes than others, even within the same platform. Additionally, maximum frame size support may also change depending on the software version used. So the varing forwarding rate can be also because of the difference in the ASICs used .
