3DES VPN Latency

Are there any case studies or testing involved with 3DES versus DES?

We have PIX firewalls with VPN 3000 Concentrators. Our remote clients connect via the Cisco VPN 3.5.1 client. Some users feel that the 3DES could be adding latency to their connections. My testing doesn't show any degredations, but I was wondering if anyone else had any solid testing out there.

Thanks

Re: 3DES VPN Latency

3des is more processor intensive due to the longer encryption. The way your users connect an the type of computer they are using is a big part of it. You also should upgrade to one of the newer clients. I have had major problems with the verison you are using and windows xp sp1 and win2k sp3. It made to computers unusable. We don't support any encrypted connections over dialup to our 3030, you must use pptp and pap if you dial. Also I have found that local testing does not work. You should try to get one of the troubles computers if it is a notebook and test with that.
