I have an old Cisco 4000 or 4000M router that I want to upgrade (Flash and RAM). The IOS images and memory supported are different. How do I differentiate between 4000 and 4000M? Any suggestions?

a 4000M only means the box has upgraded memory options there is no difference in code that you use on the box

However,

When I order the memory or flash to upgrade to router, how do I know which to order? I don't know which router I have? How would I found out?

they are the same exact boxes the only differenc is that the 4000M came with more memory than the 4000.

I beleive the 4000 came with 16MB of RAM 4 shared and 8 MB flash and the 4000M was 32 DRAM 16 shared 16 flash

Based on what you told me, I will purchase the memory and flash because it should be the same RAM and Flash for both. Right? However, then what is my limitation? Doesn't 4000 has lower limit the 4000M? What happens if I buy more RAM and Flash and it exceeds the limit of 4000?
