Can I connect a 4006 (let's call it sally) sup II as a trunk link back to the core 4006 which has a layer 3 RSM installed and configured and expect full functionality assuming that (sally) does not have an RSM installed?

Yes you can do this and have your core 4006 with RSM module do the intervlan routing

Dependent upon the size of your network, I wouldn't want to have the main portion (or any for that matter) of your routing being taken care of at the core layer. Would it be possible in your scenario, perhaps to take out the RSM in the core 4006 and deploy it in the ITN (distro) 4000?
