How should we configre the external gbic ports on the L3 module as an uplink to the vlan in a 3524 switch.

It's going to take a little reading, and checking out the sample configs. You should read up on things with the links that bsivasub provided.

The short story is to make the L3 vlan interfaces to match the VLANs in the 3524 (assuming you configure a VTP domain that both subscribe to). Once you do that, assign both switchs' GBIC ports to the desired VLAN, hook them up, and then configure your L3 module just as you would if the 3524 switch wasn't there.
