4503 vlan routing.

I am kind of new to the whole layer3 switching, so please be kind.

When we purchaced the 4503 we were under the impression that we could route out the VLANs. So heres what I tries to do with out success.

We have our NEC PBX that was just converted over to IP phones. So I created an VLAN22 with ports g3/23-24 assigned to them and an IP of 172.16.253.2 255.255.0.0 no shut. Then I used the VLAN1 with the remainer of the ports and an IP of 10.0.30.31 255.255.240.0 no shut. When I do a sh ip ro it only shows that 10.0.0.0 is directly cnnected. It does not show the 172.16.0.0 int the routing table. If I do a sh int vlan22 its is down/down.

Am I doing this wrong??? I thought we would be able to have different VLANs up at the same time on a L3 switch. Do I need to have VLAN1 shutdown for this to work? PLease any help would be appriciated.

I tried to by pass this and do a L3 interface but I need 2 ports to fall under the 172.16.0.0 subnet and route to the 10.0.16.0 subnet.

Do you have the members in VLAN 22 active? You need to have an active member for the VLAN interface to be up/up

if you mean having the links up as "Active" then yes. I have 2 switches connected (uplinked and sh int status shows connected) to VLAN22, one in g3/23 and one in g3/24 each with 9 systems on them.

For int g3/23,24 I did a switchport access vlan22.

Sh VLAN shows port g3/23,24 as members of VLAN22 and nothing else.

Any Ideas???
