5250 emulation sessions drop

We have a few hundred clients that are connecting to an AS400 via a frame. We have been experiencing intermittent drops in 5250 emulation connectivity and are trying to determine if it is WAN related or a switchport configuraton issue.

We are using a Catalyst 6500 series switch at the core (MSFC2) and have Catalyst 3500 XL switches in the wiring closets. Presently keepalives are not set on the switchport interfaces. Could this be an issue?

mayne, keepalives might generally not create a problem. You can turn on keepalive and set it to a lower value (like 5 secs) to check this..

If you have more than 1 PC on the LAN accessing the AS400 application:

1) If there is a problem with the WAN, all PC's in the LAN will give drops.

2) If there is only one PC that is giving a drop, then there might be some problem with the specific switch port associated with it..
