6500 VLAN Interface (SVI) Throughtput

Guys,

Very quick one, does anyone have any stats on throughputs on a VLAN Interface on a 6500 MSFC2

I just remember the old days where if you had an RSM, and it had a VLAN interface, the throughtput was 400Mbps (or sommat like that)

Can a 6500 MSFC2 SVI run at a full gig?

Hi Ken,

AFAIK the throughput is 1Gbps. Yes it runs at 1gig.

Check the output from one router

sh int vlan102

Vlan102 is up, line protocol is up

Hardware is EtherSVI, address is xxxx.xxxx.xxxx (bia xxxx.xxxx.xxxx)

I dont think i worded my question correctly atall. Sorry!

What I was getting at - and this was some time ago.

You used to have a cat5500 and you created the SVIs on there. The trunk between the switch and RSM (i think as far as I can remember) had a throughput rating of 400Mbit, so if you had x ammount of SVIs, you could oversubscribe the trunk between the switch and RSM.

Does the 6500 switch archtecture have the same thing?

So, as you state, YES, the SVI runs a 1G, if you had 25 1G SVIs, and they were all running at 70%, could you oversubscibe the link from the MSFC to the switching engine (SUP)

Its just so I know how to size a 6500 ?

You also have to remember not a lot a traffic gets passed up to the layer 3 (msfc) end because most of it is switched in hardware using CEF .Even on the old 5500's most traffic never hit the RSM , the first packet got sent to the RSM and all susequent packets in the flow were hardware switched using mls thus you you could have dozens of SVI"s configured but the RSM cpu would run maybe 10% . Thats what multi layer switching is about . With the advent of items like DFC cards even less is punted up to the msfc , it is routed right down on the line cards themselves so how big that that pipe is less important than you might think. If you have an SVI running at 70% you have a major problem and you would need to track down what the problem was because very little traffic should be routed to the SVI in normal circumstances.

That makes a lot of sense.

I just did some research, and yes it was 400M on a 5500 and now 1000 for the 6500 with an MSFC 2, so yes, they have not increased it that much becuase As you say, it should all be cef-based MLS or traditional MLS based
