6509 Recovery testing

Got a few questions about the 6509.

1. If I pull out the main SUP II card (slot 1), will the backup SUP card automatically kick in with current configuration ?

2. I want to test our recovery process if our 6509 failed..So I want to blow away the config, reboot and then reload config from saved backup..What would be the best way to do this ?

Hi Dave,

For your first question, assuming default redundancy, the answer is yes. How it all works depends on whether you area running CatOS or IOS on the supervisor. Here is some documentation on how it works for both CatOS and IOS:

For question 2, it also depends on whether you are running CatOS or IOS.

For CatOS, you can blow away the config with the command "clear config all". After reloading, you can restore the config with the command: "copy bootflash:file_name config" assuming the config file is saved in bootflash:

For IOS, use the command "write erase" and then perform a reload, and the switch will boot up with default configuration.

To restore the config, issue the command "Router# copy bootflash:file_name startup-config" assuming you have it saved on bootflash:

Thanks for the reply, currently its CatOS for the switching portion and IOS for the MSFC.

The other question I have is,if I pull out the slot 1 sup I should be able to do all my recovery testing from the slot 2 SUP correct ? Once testing complete if I put in the slot 1 SUP again will it switch back and run with the config saved ? Just trying to eliminate any issues and have a fallback plan as its my first time recovering the 6509.

Hi Dave,

If you pull the slot 1 sup, the secondary sup will take over as active. Once you re-install the sup in slot 1, it will boot up and assume the standby role so as not to cause further interruption. In order to make the sup in slot 1 active again, you'll need to trigger another failover. From the CLI, issuing the command "switch supervisor" will do it, or you can reseat the sup in slot 2.

So do both SUP cards sync up configs for the bootflash and PCMCIA devices as well ?
