Re: 802.1q Tunneling on Cat2950G-24EI

Hello Frank,

Forming an 802.1q trunk is a standard feature of both products.

Without specific requirments you can form both dynamic or configured trunk ports. The latter would provide more control over what VLANs traverse the trunk link.

A brief example:

Catalyst 3550

!

interface FastEthernet 0/24

description Trunk to C2950 Fa0/24

switchport

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

switchport mode trunk

switchport trunk vlan allowed 10, 20, 30, 40, 50

!

Catalyst 2950

!

interface FastEthernet 0/24

description Trunk to C3550 Fa0/24

switchport

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

switchport mode trunk

switchport trunk vlan allowed 10, 20, 30, 40, 50

!

Please refer to the documentation for in depth information about VTP, VLANs and trunking in particular.

I dont think IEEE 802.1Q tunneling is supported on the 2950 platform or for that matter in any of the 29xx models. You may need a 3550 to do the same.

attrgautam,

If you had bothered to check the attached URL you'd see that the 2950 indeed supports IEEE 802.1q. It however does NOT support Cisco's proprietaty ISL encapsulation.

Also with the absense of 802.1q connecting phones and marking traffic with CoS would not be possible as the 802.1p is a part of the 802.1q tag.

I do understand that 2950 supports 802.1Q, i belive the original poster was requesting for 802.1Q tunneling (q-in-q) which is not supported in the 2950.

I overlooked the word "tunneling", excuse my rudeness.
