A little question

Hi all,

How can I check the time of convergence when I change the RIP and OSPF timers?

I have to compare the two convergence times.

Thanks

Simplest way to test this.

1) Place a device on each side of the network.

2) Get a stop watch.

3) Down the interfaces.

4) Bring the interfaces up, start the watch and initiate a ping

5) Once you see a reply from the remote host, stop the watch, that's your convergence time.

Thanks Edison Ortiz,

It's a nice suggestion but I need to show data from program. Are there any programs which I can use?

Thanks again.

There are several applications out there

among others...

Save youself the cost of the stopwatch! Synchronise all your routers using NTP (which is a good exercise anyway), and put debug ip routing on all of them. Then change something on one, and watch how long it takes for the routes to turn up in the others. That way you can time it to the mearest millisecond, and you get to see what order things happened in.

Cost ? Perhaps in Luxembourg :)

Tons of software stopwatches in the 'net Kevin !

No need to crash my post to make a point with yours :) Your option is also valid, doesn't make mine invalid.

Sorry Edison, I didn't mean to crash your posting, which was equally valid of course. My comment came across wrong. I just wanted to point out (in a frivolous way perhaps) that if you are interesting in timings then the timestamp on the debug messages are useful, accurate and (nominally) synchronised.

Kevin,

It's quite all right :)

Hi Kevin,

I'll try your suggestion.

Thanks a lot.
