Active ports on a Catalyst 5500

Is there a way using SNMP or otherwise to determine how many ports are active on a catalyst switch. ?

2) How to find how long a particular port has been inactive ?

From command line you can do a "show port" to see if a port is in "connected" state. I dont believe there is any CLI to tell you how long a port has been in connected other than checking for PAGP messages in logging buffer/Syslog server and see when the port joined the bridge group and left the bridge group.
