an odd issue with a 7301

i have a 7301 returned to me by a customer saying that after upgrading the IOS to 12.3(12d) one of the ports ceased functioning. i am only beginning my testing but was puzzled when i could not even console into the router until finally setting the stopbit in the console as 2 instead of 1. Examining the configuration guide they indicate the stopbit should be 1. Is this somewhere configurable on the router or how otherwise might it have been changed? any ideas are welcomed!

thanx!

Wm

Wm,

It is configurable on the router.

conf t

line console 0

stopbit 2 ( options are 1,1.5,2)

Youc an change it on your router, set it tp 1 and you wil be fine.

Re: an odd issue with a 7301

hi

can u revert whether you have changed only the stop bits or other parameters (like baud rate,data bits,parity) too ?

AFAIK if the config register values are different it will result something like what you are facing now.

you can also change the stop bits under the line con 0 mode where u got the options for 1 or 2 where 1 is set by default..

well that is the odd thing - beneath the line con 0 it is set as

stop bits 1

which is of course the default - but still i needed to use 2 to actually get into the console! can you set the stop bits in the confreg or only the baud rate?

thx,

William

Re: an odd issue with a 7301

hi

The config register whichs 0x2102 seems fine which is the default value and which requires 9600 , 8 , none , 1 , none for the hypertrm to console onto your device.

and again the stopbits seems to set as 1 in your case which also looks ok ,but do revert with all these settings are you still prompted to key in 2 as your stop bits to get onto the box ??

We do have around 5 7301 boxes working in our network in which we didnt face this kinda weird probs..

Re: an odd issue with a 7301

William,

Its an interesting one. We thought that it could be config-register problem or the Stopbits setting problem.

What happens if you take the commands under the Line con 0 out ??? Try that and revert..

According to one of the cisco DOCS, whihc again bring out some of the confusion:

The Cisco IOS software supplies the following default serial communication parameters for terminal and other serial device operation:

* 9600 bits per second (bps) line speed

* 8 data bits

* 2 stop bits

* No parity bit

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1831/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00800d984e.html#1000903

Take the settings under the line con 0 out and revert.

Re: an odd issue with a 7301

okay. i performed a write erase then found that the stopbit variable was still set under the line con 0 and aux lines. I then removed it from both and rebooted. I now find that I can get console using either stopbits = 1 or 2! and that the stopbits 1 command has reappeared in the line con 0 and aux sections. Odd...but at least i can access the router!

thanx!

William
