Re: arp on pc

There is a principle to always keep in mind. Everything that runs an IP stack is a "router". This includes your PC. Before your PC arps, it looks at its own subnet mask to determine if the address is local. If it is local, meaning that the portion of the destination address is the same as the masked portion of its own ip address, then it considers the destination address to be on its own subnet and calls up the arp process. The arp table contains ip address to mac address resolutions for everything that it attempts to communicate with that is on it's own subnet. This includes the router because any time a destination address is determined not to be local, it will decide to send the packet to the gateway and of course arp for the mac address of the gateway/router.

HTH pls rate!
