Assigning an ip address to my eth0.1 subinterface?

I am having problems when i assign an ip address to the eth0.1 subinterface,

this is what its showing me-

Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q or ISL vLAN

when i am typing show ip interface eth0.1, this is what it shows me -

IP processing disabled.

Could anyone guide me?

You need to configure the subinterface for VLAN trunking encapsulation first.

Example:

int e0.1

encapsulation dot1q (or isl) vlan#

after that, you can assign an IP address, etc.

If this is not a trunk link, then use the ip address x.x.x.x y.y.y.y secondary command on the main interface to multinet the interface.
