ATM connection through ATM Interface Processor

Hi,

I want to connect 2 Cisco 7507 routers through ATM link (155 Mbps).

Instead of installing VIPs in each router and then plugging an ATM port adapter, I am thinking of using the Cisco ATM Interface Processor that directly plugs into a interface slot without VIP.

Can anyone point any tradeoff in this choice. Will a VIP/Port Adapter combination provide more performance?

When you use a VIP, you get some benefits like having separate packet memory on the VIP, offloading some processing functions to VIP cards, performing distributed switching or distributed QoS mechanisms like dCEF, dWFQ, dWRED on VIP etc. Depending on your network these functions can enhance the performance of the device. You may not get these benefits with just an ATM interface processor card. You can look here for more information :
