Background traffic level?

I have a small switched network. 6509 at core, dual MSFC for routing. GBIC fibre runs to 3548 edge switches. 17 VLANS created. Single VTP server at core, all others clients. NTP from MSFC to all devices. SNMP traps to NMS. Now, with no devices connected to an edge switch what sort of traffic level should I be seeing over the fibre to the edge devices? I am seeing 10-20k then it bursts to over 1M at random times. Any thoughts as to the reason?

Thanks.
