Backing up a LMS 1.1 Server with Arcserv 6 or Veritas Backup Exec

Hello,

I'm looking for information about how I can backup our LMS 1.1 server, without having to stop services and/or reboot the server.

Our backup software cannot obtain a lock on the database, and other files that are in use by RME, CWSI, NetScout, and ANI Server. I had heard that there was a way to make the Sybase Databases available for backup, while they are in use. Is this a myth?

Any suggestions, pointers, and/or tips would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Anthony Davison

CW2000 have it's own database Backup/Restore functions/scripts which are recommended, since using that will make sure that your datbases are backedup properly. Trying to backup databases when the processes are running and the db tables are open will result in corrupt backup of the db and can also corrupt the running db itself, especially for CW2000. So, using other backup tools for CW2000 are not recommended, when it has it's own backup tools.

So, I should be able to configure my backup software to skip the open files, by CWSI / RME / NetScout and ANI Server.

Thus, if the server looses it's hard drive, I should be able to restore from TAPE, the files that could be backed up to tape .... then use the LMS tools for restore, and restore my LMS Database from the directory that the tools use for backup/restore functions. Correct?

A more persise question is:

Will this give me a 100% restore of the LMS server, after a hard drive crash?

If so, Great!

Thanks!

Tony

The LMS restore script for db only works if the db was backed up using the CW2000 db backup script. If you backup using other tools and then try to restore using the Cw20000's restore script it won't work. Bottom line, if your hard disk crashes, you can re-install the application again and then restore the database back again using the application's restore script. You can use other 3rd part tools, but there's no guarantee that the restore would work that way. That's why CW2000 has it's own db management tools.
