bad chunk magic number

Hi,

I have a router Cisco 3660 with IOS 12.3(14)T.

Since a few days this router give me the following logs:

.Jun 15 13:20:43: %SYS-2-CHUNKBADMAGIC: Bad magic number in chunk header, chunk 0 data 65EE3954 chunkmagic 0 chunk_freemagic 0

I did a check to the memory but the memory load is 42MB over 128MB.

The strange thing is that the two process Chunk manager and AAL2_XGCPSPI have exceed hold memory.

PID TTY Allocated Freed Holding Getbufs Retbufs Process

1 0 1454588 5196 1460008 0 0 Chunk Manager

3 0 1163504 0 1188476 0 0 AAL2_XGCPSPI

Can anyone help me?

Thank you.

Re: bad chunk magic number

I experienced these error messages on a router that was running 12.3(8)T. I opened a TAC case on it. The TAC engineer supplied two bugIDs which might be helpful:

CSCee57895 (which seems more related) and

CSCee65576

The TAC identified these error messages as a result of a bug and suggested that I upgrade the IOS. When I loaded a newer version of IOS the error messages stopped.

So my suggestion is to do a code upgrade.

Re: bad chunk magic number

Hi,

thank you for your post. It was very useful.

The IOS release is 12.3(14)T which isn't in bug report even if the problem seems the same of the CSCee57895 bug.

How to know if this IOS release is affected?

Probably the best way to know if this release is affected is to open a TAC case and have them investigate. Or you could try a newer version of code.

I would have thought that 12.3(14)T would have picked up the fix since the code in which I had the problem was an older 12.3T version. Perhaps there is some platform specific difference in code.

All I can say is that I was getting the exact same error message and it turned out to be a software bug. I strongly suspect that your situation will also turn out to be a software bug.
