Basic info

I am planning on using 3 2950 48 port switchs connected to a 3550 switch using GBIC 1000bt and route 3 subnets to reduce bandwidth consumption. I have found a great deal on 1000bsx GBIC's and was wondering if there was any difference in speed or compatibilty i should be a ware of. any info would be great thanks.

Re: Basic info

When you say 1000baseT, are you referring to WS-G5483 copper GBICs? If so, there is no difference between this interms of speed between this GBIC and traditional fiber GBICs. Make sure your switches meet the minimum software version requirement to support copper GBICs

Re: Basic info

Yes thats exactly what i mean. and yes my switch's support them as i have already been using the copper GBIC's. Which leaves a ? in my mind as to why people would want to use fiber at more cost thatn copper.

Re: Basic info

The main advantage/purpose of Copper GBICs is connectivity to servers and desktops which have Gig NICs.
