Benefits of Vlans

Is there a way to calculate how much a network would benefit from creating vlans in a network? My boss want's to know how much our network would benefit if we added vlans and I'm not sure what to tell him without actually creating vlans on the network and comparing it to how it ran before.

We have about 450 computers all in the same vlan running TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and Appletalk which equals a lot of broadcast traffic so I know we would benefit a great deal by segmenting the network but my boss wants numbers. Any ideas?

Use a sniffer....and it will give u numbers.

What kind of topology do you have? Configs, etc? Check you router sh proc cpu and look at the utililization (its either top of the line or getting beat to hell). Your switch interfaces should give you an idea about collosions and errors. Depending on your switch SW, you can run a sh top (gives you the stats on switch port utilization on Cat 5000s. If you track down a sniffer check see what your retransmissions look like. Good Luck
