Best procedure for upgrade of cat 5K

We have several cat5ks in our enterprise on which we need to do s/w upgrades.

These contain several modules (supervisorII, WS-X520IR, WS-X5225R)

What is the best possible order in which the upgrades be done on a cat5k

Modules first?

Re: Best procedure for upgrade of cat 5K

With the exception of the Cat5k RSM, LANE module & a couple of other cards, none of the Ethernet cards have software pushed to them so all you need to do is upgrade the Supervisor II module. To proceed:

1. verify what version you are currently running.

2. check CatOS release notes of new code you wish to go to download (check for caveats)

3. download new CatOS image from CCO to a server or desktop runnning tftp server or ftp server.

4. check Sup II bootflash or external flash (PCMCIA in slot0 or slot1) to see if their is available room. Sup II bootflash normally has room for 2 images only. if space is not available you will have to remove one image before downloading a new one.

5. telnet or console to switch & tfpt or ftp the new image onto flash (copy tftp flash command)

6. once you have verified image successfully uploaded to bootflash or flash, set the new boot string (set boot system flash command). remember to use prepend option

7. issue a reboot of the switch.

8. verify POST is successful and then telnet or console in to very status of Sup and cards.

Also make sure that if you upgrading from any software before 3.2.3 you need to follow a upgrade path

Make sure you have enough DRAM for the software you want to download.
