BGP Attributes

Could anybody please explain what BGP Attributes are and how they are used?

I believe that they are BGP's way of making routing updates incredibly flexible and granular, but am not sure.

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Dan

Re: BGP Attributes

The two sources I would recommend are:

Halabi's book (Internet Routing Architectures) which is one of the best BGP sources available and a must read if you are serious about learning BGP

and

RFC 1771 (http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/cgi-bin/rfc/rfc1771.html)

Hope that helps.

Re: BGP Attributes

I suggest reading the BGP Case Studies/Tutorial at

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/PSP/psp_view.pl?p=Internetworking:BGP&s=Network_Design#General_Information

It provides excellent insight into BGP.

If you decide to dick deeper I'd recommend

Bassam Halabi: Internet Routing Architectures, ISBN 157870233X

and/or:

Jeff Doyle: Routing TCP/IP Volume II, ISBN 1578700892
