BGP route dampening

Hi, I have enabled bgp dampening as follows:

R1:

router bgp 100

network 10.1.2.0 mask 255.255.255.0<--lo0 of R1

neighbor 10.1.1.2 remote-as 200

R2:

router bgp 200

bgp dampening

network 10.1.3.0 mask 255.255.255.0 <--lo0 of R2

neighbor 10.1.1.1 remote-as 100

but after i shut down and up the network 10.1.2.0, I still don't see any flapping info on router R2. can someone tell me why?

I'm user IOS12.1, use show ip protocol, I can see the bgp route dampening is enabled. but when "show ip bgp 10.1.2.0" , there is no dampening info at all.

Thanks alot.

Re: BGP route dampening

BGP route dampening controls advertised, not learned, routes. In your example config, you would need to enable 'bgp dampening' on router R1 in order for network 10.1.2.0/24 to be suppressed.

In addition, unless you change the default behavior, a single flap will not cause a route to be suppressed. A single "flap" (by default) will assign the route a penalty of 1000. The (default) suppress limit is 2000 - meaning the route would have to "flap" at least twice within the half-life to be suppressed.
