Boot: Cannot load flash (3660)

Hi

Overnight our 3660 went down. I've been onto the tech support pages, checked various things and it looks like its the flash. I consoled into the box and received the following (I couldn't get off the crashinfo as the router was powercycled before I got in...!). Anyway, the messages on startup are:

After the 'Self decompressing the image' I got

Error: Uncompression of the image failed.

invalid compressed data--format violated

Error: zip decompress failed

loadprog: bad file magic number: 0x0

boot: cannot load "flash"

In rommon > I typed in dir flash: but couldn't get anything out.

On other forum messages I read the one where it suggests loading a new IOS image via xmodem. Would you agree that this should bring our box back to life?

Cheers

Miles

Loading via xmodem takes long time.

The best thing is use a flash card with valid IOS in the slot 0 or slot1 and boot the router. Then copy the image in the flash card to the router's flash memory.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Problem is that I don't have a flash card to put into slot 0 or 1. Would xmodem be the only other way and does it seem to you that the IOS has 'gone'

Cheers

Miles

HI

By going through your mail, i think the IOS has gone. The output of " dir flash:" doesnt have anything.

Two ways to get the IOS is one through external flash card and another through xmodem, where u download the ios through the console terminal.

The first one is the easiesnt way, but you said u dont have flash card.

so only solution is through console terminal.

C3660 doesnt have tftpdnld facility as in other routers,

If you r dowloading via console, it will take very long time, might be 5 to 6 hours depending on the speed of the port.

so try to get the flash card which can hold atleast just ip image ( which would be around 6 mb) then load the router with the image you want through tftp server.

-Deepu

Hi

I managed to download the IOS through a console cable (changed the baud rate to 115200 and took approx 2 hours - not bad). Anyway, download was complete, changed the confreg back to 0x2102, did a reset and I'm still getting the same errors

(Uncompression of the image failed.

invalid compressed data--format violated

Error: zip decompress failed

loadprog: bad file magic number: 0x0

boot: cannot load "flash"

Aaaaaahhhh. So its still in rommon, but I have got further because since the download when I rommon>dir flash: I can now see the IOS image. So tried rommon>boot flash: c3660-is-mz-122-12, booted up the image but still got the same errors. Any ideas greatly appreciated..!

Cheers

Miles

By seeing your mail, you are giving the command boot flash:c3660-is-mz-122-12

but you are not specifying the file type here. These files are .bin files which you need to give

boot flash:c3660-is-mz-122-12.bin

this IOS image is limited deployment(LD) image and has many bugs. Why dont you go for Early Delployment (ED) releases?

-Deepu

Hi

Sorry - typo. I did put .bin at the end of the command. I'll try the ED release and see if that helps.

Cheers

Miles

Hi there

I tried c3660-is-mz-122-12.bin again (am about to try c3660-is-mz-122-12.bin) but thought I'd post up the latest. The command line I typed in was:

xmodem -cx c3660-is-mz-122-12.bin

Downloaded OK, changed confreg back to 0x2102, did a reset, am now getting:

Can you give some more inputs like what is the size of your router's flash and the DRAM?

While decompressing the image, the image will be brought to the RAM from where it has to run. I think this problem is with the memory, if i am not wrong....

It looks like its not the software issue. but the hardware issue, Please try changing the flash card and load the image.
