bridging & vlans

Can you bridge within a vlan? Can you bridge between vlans?

Re: bridging & vlans

Yes you can bridge within a VLAN. Sometimes people install a pair of remote bridges to transport non-routeable traffic over WAN connections instead of encapsulating and routing.

Yes,you can bridge between VLAN, but why would you? One objective of VLAN's is to control broadcast propogation. Bridging between VLAN's defeats this objective. Typically, VLANs have different network address, bridged traffic with different network addresses wouldn't communicate. Someone might think of this if they had a combination of routeable and non-routeable protocols.

Re: bridging & vlans

Yes your vlan can span in multiple bridges or switches

But You can't bridge two VLans. As vlan creates the broadcast domains so you have to always use router or layer 3 device between two Vlans.
