is there no other way to stop a broadcast storm than to physically disconnect a cable or power off a switch?

Rather than stopping them, you should prevent broadcast storms by configuring your spanning tree correctly.

that I am fully aware of. i was just wondering IF a broadcast storm occurs, is there any mechanism to stop it at some moment in time? or will it simply circle forever until i physically disconnect it...?

What kind of switches do you have. You can configure storm/broadcast control.
