C2950T - Calhoun Statistics Event memory overrun and communication failure

Hi,

the communication on some ports on C2950T-24 fails. The leds on those ports become orange and no access to the switch is allowed (via console) due the following messages:

093468: 1w2d: CLUSTER_MEMBER_2: ../src-calhoun/strata_stats.c at line 137: can't not push event list

%% Low on memory; try again later

Local Memory Statistics

Free = 15684 Total = 4811776 Used = 4796092

093469: 1w2d: CLUSTER_MEMBER_2: ../src-calhoun/strata_stats.c at line 137: can't not push event list

I've restarted the switch and everything works fine for now. The network consists of a mix of C2950T-24 and C2950G-48 redundantly connected to two C3750. The IOS on all switches has been recently upgraded to the latest version (c2950-i6q4l2-tar.121-19.EA1 and c3750-i9-tar.121-19.EA1).

There is nothing suspicious in the log, just the common interface and line protocol up/down, no buffers failures, low broadcast and multicast.

I've found the following info about the mysterious 'calhoun':

--- show process memory ---

Total: 7851680, Used: 2882252, Free: 4969428

PID TTY Allocated Freed Holding Getbufs Retbufs Process

19 0 320 184 3944 0 0 Calhoun Storm Co

20 0 0 0 6808 0 0 Calhoun LED Proc

21 0 46760 46760 3808 0 0 Calhoun Statisti

--- show buffers ----

Interface buffer pools:

Calhoun Packet Receive Pool buffers, 1560 bytes (total 256, permanent 256):

224 in free list (0 min, 256 max allowed)

2356 hits, 0 misses

Does anybody know what 'calhoun' means or is used for? Any hint what is wrong?

Thanks.

Roland

upgrade to 121-19.ea1a.bin, there is a major bug with cdp using up memory and it not being renewed, either turn off cdp using "no cdp run" or upgrade to another version of software. The software will work for a few days and then die, the console will not work, I also recommend using the snmp stats to monitor the free memory on the 2950's

Hello,

Calhoun is the name of the bootstrap program. If you do a show version you probably see the following:

2950#sh ver

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) C2950 Software (C2950-I6Q4L2-M), Version 12.1(19)EA1, RELEASE SOFTWARE

(fc1)

Image text-base: 0x80010000, data-base: 0x80528000

ROM: Bootstrap program is CALHOUN boot loader

2950 uptime is 1 week, 4 days, 23 hours, 39 minutes

System returned to ROM by power-on

System image file is "flash:/c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-19.EA1.bin"

Not sure where that error message comes from though...

GP
