campatible software for our research

Hi, i am student doing masters in Telecomm.

The software should be helpful in several ways as,

• We are trying to build documentation for network and telephony-related infrastructure of our campus. It includes physical layouts and topologies of voice and data networks, security guidelines for access to physical spaces and network, safety features in place etc.

• This software would be in a deliverable CD format by which you can customize and build the whole network setup

• It could serve in some disaster situation like this; let’s assume that some part of the switch is down & this causes a part of campus loosing connectivity but nobody figures out what is wrong within the devices. What this software could do is, it would have the whole network setup as it is and if you click on a building that is down, you’ll get all the routers & switches connected and as you drill down, it would give its configuration, any backup line if possible, the contact person & any other possible customizable features.

• The key is to use a product that is easy to use, visually interesting and logically organized

we have tried netViz and we really like that but the problem is their is no funding to buy this software and it is really costly for us.

any input will be greatly appreciated

thanx in advance

Re: campatible software for our research

I saw this as an IT-developed Application on an Apple Newton, using hyperlinks.

The department had one for each engineer. It contained hyperlinks such that you could select a user-end jack number, it would hyperlink to the next closet/panel/port, then to the data center (panel-port, switch/router port, then all other relevent info (subnet/Elan/Vlan, server(s), groups, logins, etc).

There were a number of shortcut links and worked in either direction (if you needed to know what/who was connected to panel 4, port 12 in cab 3, it would take you to the user jack, or the switch/router port).

It was a pretty slick app, especially given the platform. I haven't seen anything portable like it since.

Find a CS / programming major and work out the details....

Good Luck
