Can multicast work over 2 equal cost links?

We need multicasting over 2 equal cost links and don’t want to load balance multicast traffic.

We also don’t want to use tunnels, this is only needed when you want to load balance multicast traffic.

We have BGP running between the Loopback addresses and 2 static routes over both serials to the loopback address.

Serial interface’s have ip numbers as well.

Router 1 serial 0/0 and serial 0/1 ip address loopback 1.1.1.1

Ip route 2.2.2.2 255.255.255.255 serial 0/0

Ip route 2.2.2.2 255.255.255.255 serial 0/1

Router 2 serial 0/0 and serial 0/1 ip address loopback 2.2.2.2

Ip route 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255 serial 0/0

Ip route 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255 serial 0/1

This question is similar to the question ask on Dec 2, 2002, “RPF check with equal IGP cost links, how is RPFcalculated?”

Interesting question and I think that if you design it right things should work fine as long the state information/path info for the flow is maintained.

This doc discribes what you are trying to accomplish and the problems that one might run into w/multicast using RPF

Look for Multicast Forwarding and Reverse Path Check in the url below and it should help you.

I am assuming that you are runing DVMRP externally and msdp internally?

Nope it wil not work!

put the static to a ip nummer than it will work :-)

no route 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255 serial 0/0

Ip route 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255
