Re: Can't Ping an Span Port

You have to enable input packets on the SPAN port.

How this is done (and if it is indeed possible) depends on the architecture and software version.

Re: Can't Ping an Span Port

Im Reasonably sure that a SPAN port Does not allow any traffic into that port

I disagree. CAT OS and XL series does it for sure. CAT 4k with Sup3/4 supports this from 12.1(19)EW.

2950/3550/CAT6k Native IOS do not have this feature yet.

Re: Can't Ping an Span Port

2950 has support for input packets from 12.1(13)EA1.

I remember seing it on the software roadmaps for the other "E" platforms as well, but not when it would be implemented.

Re: Can't Ping an Span Port

To my knowledge, the only support that 2950's have for this type of thing is so-called "ingress forwarding", which allows a SPAN destination port to receive inbound traffic (e.g., traffic from the IDS device). This enables the IDS to send TCP resets upon the detection of malicious traffic, and so forth. But from the documentation it appears that this feature does not allow traffic to be sent to the IDS device, as this would be egress forwarding.
