Cannot format PCMCIA flash card

Trying to format a PCMCIA flash card that was previously in a 7200 router, from our Cat 5500 Sup3 to use in it from now on.

Console> (enable) format slot0:

All sectors will be erased, proceed (y/n) [n]? y

Enter volume id (up to 30 characters):

Unknown device mfg id (ffffffff.ffffffff.ffffffff)error = -1

Format device slot0 failed (unspecified error)

This was a working card in the router, but the Cat just cant format it or even read it.

Console> (enable) cd slot0:

Console> (enable) dir

error = -24

Open device slot0 failed (bad device info block)

I also haven't come across any docs that include info on this error yet, and a search here yeilded very little help. Am I missing something ?

Could this be a fash disk (ATA) card rather than a linear flash card. In your 7200, that previously had this card in it, doing a show version would show you something like the following:

The below is for ATA file system and "disk" option should be used for this; slot0

20480K bytes of ATA PCMCIA card at slot 0 (Sector size 512 bytes).

The below is a Flash file system and "slot" option should be used for this; slot1

8192K bytes of Flash PCMCIA card at slot 1 (Sector size 128K).

If this is an ATA card you'd like this type error I believe. I do not thing that ATA is supported on the catalyst, if this is the issue.

Hope this helps,

Don

I've got the same problem with a 3620 router. When a sh ver is given there is no indication of this flash card being a ATA disk. Here the output in the router:

16384K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

20480K bytes of processor board PCMCIA Slot0 flash (Read/Write)

The Cat 5500 (supervisor engine III) shows:

Cat5500 (enable) format slot0:

All sectors will be erased, proceed (y/n) [n]? y

Enter volume id (up to 31 characters): test

Unknown device mfg id (00.00.00)error = -1

Format device slot0 failed (unspecified error)

Cat5500 (enable)

Cat5500 (enable)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
