We have a number of CAT 3500 XL series switches in the 24 or 48 port configurations, that are presently running IOS 12.0(5.2) XU
We are beginning to implement wireless in our building and are interested in using the 802.1X port based authentication. At the core we have a CAT 6509, which has support using release 12.1(13)E. Will the CAT 3500 XL series support 802.1X?? In searching the cisco site I could only find mention of the 3550 switch.

We are in a similar situation, and unfortunately the 3500 XL series does not support 802.1x. You will have to upgrade to the 3550 or 2950.

No the 3500 XL series does not support 802.1X. 3500 switches are End of sale and no new features will be ported in to this platform

You might want to consider 3550 series which support 802.1X
