Does anyone know if the RSM has to be installed in slot 3 or higher (like the Cat 5000 series) or can it be installed in slot 2? I get an error trying to connect to "session 2" . If it has to be in slot 3 that would make sense....

As the per this URL, the switching modules can go on any slot 2 to 6. I would only suspect any seating problem and version compatibility issues here.

Just check if the module is recognisied by issuing the "show module" command. If it is not try a suitable catOS on the supervisor that would support this RSM.

Also check if the card is seated properly

WS-X4232-L3 can go into any slot from 2 through 6. Make sure the Supervisor 2 is running 5.5(1) and above. If you have the IOS based Supervisor 3 engine, the WS-X4232-L3 will not be recognized.

Are you able to telnet to the IP address of the RSM? Do you see it as CDP neighbor? Also take a look at the following bug

I'll try the router reload as the bug states. In case I am missing something obvious I have pasted in the 'sh ver' and 'sh cdp nei' outputs as well as the error. Thanks for assisting.
