cat 6500 crash while upgrading from CatOS to IOS

hi all,

we had a serious error while upgrading an catalyst 6500 with MSFC2/PFC2 from catos to ios.

the error occurs when we boot from the flash-disk for the first time with ios. the switch-processor seems to work all right - it looks like that the msfc has a problem with coming up correctly.

here's the console output:

"

rommon 1 > boot disk0:s222-advipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF2.bin

has anyone had this error before while migrating catos/ios? could this be an issue of corrupt ram (we changed the msfc ram to 512MB to support the ios image)?

thank's a lot for any hint to this problem,

kind regards

Did you download the software for the C6000/MSFC2?

I noticed from the output that this is what you have.

If not you may have downloaded the wrong image.

The filename should be something like:

c6msfc2-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF2.bin

or

c6msfc2-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF2.bin

Hi

The image is correct if you are migrating to Native IOS. Please can you post the output of a sh bootvar from the MSFC? Is the MSFC set to boot from sup-slot0:?

Re: cat 6500 crash while upgrading from CatOS to IOS

hi,

i could already solve the problem in a troubleshooting session in the lab:

the supervisor engine was equipped with less sufficient memory.

in the IOS version 12.2(18)SXF2 there's 256MB of ram nessecary. the error occured with only 128MB ram on the supervisor card.

it was a little bit surprising for me, because i thought that when using native-ios, only the msfc memory is determining (the value that i see before i download the image from cco). but that was probably wrong.

looking into the release notes for IOS 12.2SX for Supervisor Engine 2, 32 and 720 i found out, that 256MB DRAM at minimum are needed.(http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/prod_release_note09186a00801c8339.html#wp2561255)

after changing the sup ram to 256mb everything worked fine.

anyway, thank's a lot for your assistance,

kind regards,

bernhard
