Cat 6506 Memory Fragmentation

How can I defrag the system memory in the Catalyst 6506? Do I have to reboot the device in order to do it?

Re: Cat 6506 Memory Fragmentation

I assuming you are running into this scenario.

Excessive Memory Fragmentation error that you're seeing in DFM is because of a bug in the DFM application itself:

CSCdu56631, "DFM shows bogus Memory ExcessiveFragmentation faults for Catalyst"

DFM 1.1 shows spurious Memory ExcessiveFragmentation faults for catalyst switches due to unnecessary monitoring of LargestFreeBuffer (this is a fixed value in catalysts). This defect has been fixed in DFM 1.1 IDS 1.1.1, which is now available for download:

1) Go to

2) Log into Cisco.com

3) Read the appropriate Readme file and download the appropriate platform image for DFM 1.1 IDS 1.1.1

Let me know

That is, indeed, what I was seeing. I did as you said, and the error went away. Thanks very much.
