Re: Cat6509 need to go from IOS to CATOS

This document, http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00801350b8.shtml, highlights the steps you need to take on converting the system software for this switch from IOS to CatOS on both the Supervisor and Multilayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC).

I would give it a thorough read and make Plans B and C before I give it a go...

Good luck!

Josef.

Re: Cat6509 need to go from IOS to CATOS

A lot of people still prefer using the CATOS, as they are used to the feel of the OS, and also that almost all their catalyst switches are running CATOS as standard. Cisco is pushing the IOS so that more people will get used to it, and also have the same feel like other catalyst (IOS based switches). I would think, some day Cisco will stop supporting the CATOS and then you will be in trouble, trying to migrate to IOS at that time. Why not start using IOS now...??

Re: Cat6509 need to go from IOS to CATOS

The problem is the service modueles that are in the 6500. We have a nam-2, idsm-2 and vms2.2 supporting all of this. Some features seem to have stoped working when we went from an older chasis running CATOS to the new chasis running IOS. Cisco says reason why is because IOS will not support some of the features of these particular serive modules. Its a work in progress kinda thing, kinda hard to tell a customer that after they just droped 250k on gear.

Re: Cat6509 need to go from IOS to CATOS

Hi,

This is not a tough activity, infact it is very simple, which supervisor module is installaed on the Cisco 6509 switch and also let me know do you have a redundant supervisor? the below steps are to be followed in order to complete this migration successfully.

Note:- Take a backup of the existing CatIOS Image onto a PCMCIA Card.

Note:- When you convert teh system software complete configuration will be lost on the switch.

Note:- Plan the downtime accordingly.

1.Take backup of the existing configuration and seggregate the L2 part, ie, VLANs, Trunking, VTP, STP, etc... and the L3 part ie, Interface Vlan X and the routing information.

2. Select the appropriate CatOS Image for the SP, BootImage and the MainImage IOS for the RP.

3. Copy the CatOS Image to sup-bootflash: (Sup)

4. Copy the BootImage of the IOS to the bootflash: (MSFC).

5. Reset the configuration register to 0X0 and reload the switch.

6. Now the switch will be in rommon

7. Give the command dir bootflash:

8. Verify the CatOS Image in the bootflash

9. Give the command boot bootflash:

10. It takes a while to boot and then it comes to the Supervisor console.

11. Verify the status by giving the show module command and check for module 15 (MSFC)

12. Then do a switch console to the MSFC and verify whether it has booted up or not to the boot mode.

13. When you find that the SP and the RP has booted up fine.

14. Format the bootflash: on the SP and copy the CatOS Image, set the boot config register to 0X2102 and set the boot reference to the bootflash:

15.Login to the MSFC, configure VLAN1 and then ping to the TFTP Server.

16. Format the bootflash: on the MSFC, copy the bootimage and the main image,

17 In the global configuration mode, give the command

boot system flash bootflash:c6msfcxxx.bin

boot bootldr bootflash:c6msfc-bootxxx.bin

config-register 0X2102

18.Write the Configuration by issuing the command wr mem

19.Exit from the RP and come back to SP, verify the boot parameters and reset the switch.

20. Now the Switch boots up and is converted from IOS to CatOS.

Thanks and Regards
