Catalyst 3500 100MBps issue

One of our small sites is using a Cisco Catalyst 3500XL switch (24 Port) for office connectivity. In the past week intermitent network issues have come to light in this office including loss of network shares-printers-Internet.....Investigating further it was noted that users/servers on the switch are experiencing about a 40% packet loss. Connecting to another switch (Baystack 10MBps) had the users/servers at 0% packet loss. Forcing the clients/servers to 10MBps on the Cisco Catalyst gave them 0% packet loss, so the switch has been configured for 10MBps Full Dup vs. auto negotiate. This works fine other than the site being at 10MBps rather than 100MBps. Any known issues with the Auto Negotiate or speed problems at 100MBps?

Brian,

If you know servers that the will be permanently located at one site it is recommeded to set them to 100/full-duplex versus auto-negotiation.

The following links should be useful:

Troubleshooting Common Issues on Catalyst 2900XL & 3500XL switches:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/164.html

Troubleshooting Cisco Catalyst Switches to NIC Compatibility Issues:

Hope this helps,

Rajesh

Yeh I have read that. However, everything that is placed on the switch and set to 100MBps (auto or manual on both sides) has packet loss.

If you have a spare 2924XL or 3524XL, you could try replacing the switch and observe the results. Could be a hardware issue. What is the IOS version on this switch?

You may want to open a TAC case.

Hi,

I have known and seen some issues with the 3500 and auto negotiation. Usually the problem has been with onboard NICs from 3Com 3c509B,C. There is a IOS that helped correct the problem along with the driver update. This has been a big problem and really hit the 3550's hard. But check your drivers, and IOS for NIC compatibility issues. If here everything is ok, then try to find a common among your devices. I have also seen the some older cards just will not work with the 3500's no matter what setting, if you have a hub or a switch between the device and the port it works. Very strange, and no one seems to comment on it. ;-)

Corey

hi

it seems auto negotition is failing in ur network

configure full duplex forcefully on ur switch and also keep it to 100 mbp

also keep the user pc and server lan card to full duplex

the mismatch wont occur and u will get the sol

the autonegotition does fail sometimes

so its better to keep full duplex forcefully
