Catalyst 3500 serie successor

Successor for the Catalyst 3500 series. What is the proper successor when you need more than 64 spanning-tree instances (max in the 2950 series), is it the 3550? Then any particular reason why the max span.-tree instances is limited to 128 (compared to 256 in the good "old" 3500).

New 3550 is the successor. MST or 802.1s is more powerful then just PVST with 256 vlans. the reason for 128 is probably due to prevent CPU overload with 256 STP instances. using 802.1s which is simple and powerful is the best choice. 3500XL do not support 802.1s.
