CEF on a Cisco 2620

Does the Cisco 2620 support CEF? Is CEF CPU Intensive? Does anyone have any documentation on how to configure CEF on a Cisco 2620?

Thanks,

DTA

Re: CEF on a Cisco 2620

CEF is supported for 7000, 7200 routers and above with certain memory requirements. However, I think you still can enable cef on a 2620 router if you have the right IOS image, but in that case, the IOS will select the next fastest switching path like optimum, process switching or fast switching.

CEF is not CPU intensive, but takes a lot of memory though. CEF if implemented properly, it can lower your CPU utilization.

Check the following link for more information on CEF,

Re: CEF on a Cisco 2620

yes 2620 support CEF and this is not CPU intensive.

global command [ip cef] to ativate it

on a particular interface [ip route-cache cef], per default when CEF globaly configured (mandatory)

to make CEF per session load sharing over multiple interfaces, apply the command on each one [ip load-sharing per-destination], per default

to make CEF per packets load sharing over multiple interfaces, apply the command on each one [ip load-sharing per-packet]

per inteface command

Re: CEF on a Cisco 2620

CEF is supported in 12.0 or later IOS.

CEF can actually save system resources compare to that of other switching mechanisms (i.e FastSwitching) but it is good to read about before enabling to ensure it will give you want you want. Also it helps when troubleshooting CEF related problems.

"ip cef" globally will enable cef

Here is a link describing CEF.

Hope this helps,

Don
