CEF Operation - Packet Flow to MSFC

Guys,

Very quick one.

Please see the published "cisco diagram re CEF"

So can I just confirm,

In tradition MLS, (briefly)

PC A on vlan 10 (starts tcp session)sends packet to PC B on VLAN 20. First packet of the flow would go to the MLS-RP and be L3 routed, them MLS entry would be created on the MLS-SE and all other packets would be switched by the MLS-SE

In CEF-Based MLS,

As the FIB is built from the RT and downloaded to hardwrae as the FIB, PC A starts a TCP connection with PC B and the first packet would not even go to the L3 card (ie MSFC) and all the traffic from the initial packet to the last packet in the flow would be switch in hardware without even going near the MSFC (ie for the inital TCP SYN packet)

Please can you confirm this small point for me.

Many thx indeed,

Ken

Ken,

That is absolutely correct. CEF is not data-driven like MLS so none of the packets will need to be process-switched...

Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.
