When changing the global ISDN switch type on a router, I know you have to reload the router but do you also have to reload after changing the switch type on an interface?

No..you do not need to reload the router in either case. If you want change the switch-type under the interface, just shut down the controller first and then change it.
Also you don't need to reboot the router to change the global switch-type. Switch-type configured under the Interface will over-right the global switch-type.

If I not mistaken, the reload after changing the isdn switch type was on older IOS images (prior 11.3)...the newer IOS will not require it.
Just curious what IOS image are you running?
Thanks, Mak.
