changing OSPF default interface cost

What are the consequences of changing the OSPF default metric cost. We have a situation with a FDDI and a FASTETHERNET interfaces on the same router with the same default cost of 1. If we wanted to force the devices connected to use the FDDI first and the FASTETHERNET only for fault tolerance, would it be ok to increase the FASTETHERNET interface cost to 2?

Re: changing OSPF default interface cost

You can change the reference bandwith in Cisco IOS version 11.2 and higher, using the

ospf auto-cost reference-bandwith

command under

router

ospf

By default reference-bandwidth is 100 Mbps.
