Cisco 1720 Problem with fa0

Hi,

I hope someone is able to assist.

I have been using the router for many hours and all of a sudden fa0 stops responding. I use a console cable to hook onto the router. If i do a ping 192.168.0.250 (IP address of fa0) it works fine. But if i ping 192.168.0.1 (IP address of my PC on the LAN) i get timeout.

Using sh int fa0, the interface is up and line protocol is up. No abnormal condition noticed.

Then i manually do a shut followed by no shut on fa0. This returns fa0 back into normal operation.

I can't figure out why fa0 is behaving this way. Any pointers will be much appreciated.

Thank you very much. Regards.

Hello,

the default ARP timeout is 4 hours, that is how long the ARP entry for the PC will stay in the ARP table. Try to increase the arp timeout to 28800 seconds (8 hours) and check if the problem persists.

Which IOS version are you using on your 1720 ?

Regards,

GP

Ok. I have increased arp timeout. Let's see if it works.

IOS is c1700-y7-mz IP/ADSL. 16MB flash/48MB RAM.

Don't mind i ask. What is the rational behind increasing arp timeout ?

Regards.
