Cisco 1721 and DHCP

I am wondering if a Cisco 1721 running IOS 12.3 can act as a DHCP on a specific sub-interface. I will be setting up two VLANs that will not be communicating with each other at all. The primary VLAN has a DHCP and will continue to use it. Would I be able to use the 1721 to act as a DHCP for the second VLAN with a complete different IP block. Thanks.

Re: Cisco 1721 and DHCP

Hi,

When you setup a router as a DHCP server, it will be used as a DHCP server for all networks connected to it.

However, if you only configure addresses for a certain network, it will only be able to hand out addresses for that network/subnet. Therefore, you achieve your objective.

So in a nutshell, the answer to your query is yes, you can do that.

Here's a sample config:

service dhcp

!

ip dhcp pool DCHPPool1

network

default-router

dns-server

!

ip dhcp excluded-address

(since you don't want it handing out addresses such as the router's address)

Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

Thank you. I'll have to try this at the site next week!
