Cisco 2621XM Flash Upgrade

What are the steps required to upgrade a Cisco 2621XM router from 16MB to 32MB of flash? The current 16MB flash appears to be built onto the board so it is not a chip swap like most upgrades in the past.

Re: Cisco 2621XM Flash Upgrade

Hi,

You simply replaced the Flash SIMM on 2621XM. That means you need to power off the router and open the chassis. Replace with the desired flash memory. Make sure you have your ESD strap on. There is only one 80pin SIMM on 2600 chassis which is the FLASH SIMM. So you won't confuse with the dual DRAM SIMM.

Re: Cisco 2621XM Flash Upgrade

To clarify this a bit . . . there is not an exisitng SIMM. The 16MB flash appears to built on to the board. We installed the 32MB chip into the 80 pin SIMM and powered the router backup. It appears to boot off the old flash initially?? Then the router appears to go into some sort of bootup loop. Do we have to change a setting to get the router to use the SIMM chip versus the onboard flash?

Re: Cisco 2621XM Flash Upgrade

Hi, any flash you put in the simm slot will be in addition to the 16Mb onboard. The IOS image you are currently using is in the onboard portion and the router will continue to boot from that unless told otherwise.

Can you cut and paste the output at bootup?

Make sure you are installing XM flash in an XM router. The flash is not interchangeable with that used in older, non-XM, platforms.

Re: Cisco 2621XM Flash Upgrade

I think our problem here may be that we are installing a 32MB SIMM into the 2621XM. The 16MB onboard plus the new SIMM adds up to 48MB. Do I need to do a boot ROM upgrade on the XM chassis to get to 48MB. I have found documentation that shows the 2621XM can handle 32MB for sure.

Re: Cisco 2621XM Flash Upgrade

I believe the boot rom upgrade is only required for the non-XM 2621 router. The CPQRG lists the 2621XM as capable of 48Mb flash. Check the flash you have is definitely for the XM series. Look for a label on it with 16-2346-xx.

I do not see that label . . . all of the SIMM's have a CS2600XM/32F sticker. The chips themselves have INTEL E28F128 . . . J3A150 . . . A3107261D . . . E119687 written on the SIMM.

Re: Cisco 2621XM Flash Upgrade

I'll have to check when I'm in the office tomorrow unless someone can confirm earlier.

Can you paste the output of the boot process with the flash in the router? Also break into rommon and do a dir flash: see what files are present and the size it reports.
