I am trying to connect my cisco 2908-xl (IOS (tm) C2900XL Software (C2900XL-H-M), Version 11.2(8)SA3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)) to a cisco 3550 (12.0.5(xu))

I am using a cross over cable and have configured the 3550 port as an isl trunk and the 2900 as a switch port but they arent talking.

Could someone please point me in the right direction

Just use a straight cable and define also

the switch port as an isl trunk.

Under the interface you need to configure

switchport mode trunk !to convert from access port to trunk

switchport trunk encap isl !this is default so won't show up in the config, config anyway to ensure isl

options are access or multi, cannot enter trunk it errors!

It appears you need to be running SA4 to get trunking support. You will need to upgrade code.

I am having the same problem, and i have figured out that you have to use a switchport access vlan ##. I know nothing more. I am asking the same question myself.
