Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Dear All

I have a few 3640 routers in my network with 10Mbps Ethernet connecting to 2900XL switches. I get on all of them lots of errors.

I was told previously to set the ethernet port to full duplex and set the switch to full/10 . I have tried and am still getting errors.Ethernet0/0 is up, line protocol is up

Hardware is AmdP2, address is 0050.7368.31c1 (bia 0050.7368.31c1)

Internet address is x.x.x.x/24

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 3/255, rxload 18/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive set (10 sec)

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input 00:00:00, output 00:00:00, output hang never

Can some one send me a config example of a router 10Mbps ethernet port to a Switch 2900xl that is running with no errors.

Regards

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Full Duplex is not supported on the ethernet interface in your router.

I have tested this with an identical adapter (NM-1E-2W) on my own network, to be 100% certain. The keyword duplex is missing from the interface config-list. Therefore I assume that it is only capable of running in half-duplex-mode and i.e. there is a duplex-mismatch in your network.

I am using IOS 12.0(24) GD on this box.

You probably have configured full duplex only on the 2900-switch?

So the obvious way to improve your error count is to configure your corresponding switch port back to half-duplex.

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Hi,

not sure what your 3640 config looks like, but do you have the command ' media-type 10BaseT' in your Ethernet interface config of your 3640 ?

I have a 1601 connected to a 2900XL, no probems with the following config:

1601

interface Ethernet0

ip address x.x.x.x

2900

interface FastEthernet0/1

switchport access vlan 10

spanning-tree portfast

So that means no additional config from the default, except for the spanning tree command on the switch.

Do a sh int on your cat2900:

The text: 100BaseTX/FX just means that the interface is 100Mb capable.

You will see this text on every interface.

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

I have the speed set to auto I'll try to change it to 10Mbps on the switch

As you can see it's mainly collisions, you are getting a few errors on your port.

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

After you changes the duplex setting to full did you reset the port ? You need to bounce the port for the change to take effect

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

This is my 2900-XL:

interface FastEthernet0/21

speed 10

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Ethernet interfaces in Cisco routers work fine with 10 Mbps HALF DUPLEX, but it is normal to have a lot of errors when it is configured to full duplex. Change to HALF DUPLEX both interfaces (switch and router) and errors will dissapear.

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

You should be able to run this at 10 Mb full duplex with no problem . He have many boxes with the same ehternet controller that is running full duplex.

Silver

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

all of your errors are ignores , ignores are when your interface is overloaded with traffic and there are no free buffers to buffer the packet.

see this URL re ignores.

http://googleweb-1.cisco.com/search?q=cache:http://cco-rtp-1.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps274/products_tech_note09186a0080094aef.shtml+ignores&ie=UTF-8&site=CDC&output=xml_no_dtd&client=CDC&proxystylesheet=CDC&oe=UTF-8

again you should have no issues going full duplex

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Do you have the IOS that supports Full duplex on the 3640 running? I know this is only supported from 12.1 or higher so anything below will not do Full duplex. When looking at your sh int output I see MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec, to me that means your IOS does NOT have the duplex support. Collisions are impossible on a full duplex connection!! Duplex mismatch is one of the biggest problems in networking today and causes big delays for the half duplex side checks for traffic/collisions and the full duplex side does not. So my advice is to use half duplex as long as your not sure that you have the support for Full duplex.

Regards, Maarten Sjouw.

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

I am running code in the 12.0 mainline that does support Full duplex. It is not the it is the Ethernet controller that dictates .

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Well I found this document that discusses the nm2/1e2w part:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/107/nm-e2w.shtml

But still you should never see collisions on a full duplex port...

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

This is a nice document!

Although you could easily misunderstand that some modules are supported in the 2600 & 3600 series.

The URL: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/779/smbiz/service/pubmatrix/mod/mod227_xref.htm

states correctly what is supported on a 2600. I knew it was there somewhere but I had to search a long time. Not everything has improved after the last overhaul of the Cisco-site but OK. I have the following remarks:

NM-1E1R2W and NW-1E2W are NOT supported. Reading the document you found, one is led to believe that these modules are supported. They are defintely not, I have tested it.

Checking the new features of rel 12.0(4)T gives no clues about the implementation of support for full duplex!?

So what about the quality of this document? (not your fault of course)

You might be right that it is a new feature and it is included with 12.1. Currently we don't have any 3600 series with an ethernet module running under this release. We are using 12.0(24) GD on all these routers and it would really wonder me if Cisco has not built this feature in 12.0 mainline.

I checked several boxes and are all doing half duplex and not capable of more. Next year we will probably upgrade all 3600s to 12.1 and I will keep this in mind.

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Again

I have boxes 2600 & 3600 that are running 12.0 mainline that are running full duplex . Just add the full-duplex command under the interface . You also must reset the interface.

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

And you are 100% certain that these are not Fast Ethernet interfaces?

For Fast Ethernet interfaces this command is available and working.

On modules with the AmdP2-based ethernetcontrollers like NM-1E, NM-1E1R2W, NM-1E2W this option is NOT available under interface configuration.

Neither is the command media-type xx. The latter has also been referred to in this discussion but is only relevant for the 4000 series.

Our current release is 12.0(24) IP/IPX/AT/DEC plus. (ds-mz) We also use 12.1(17) but (unfortunately) not on routers with this type of controllers.

In the coming week I might be able to test this in the lab. I'll keep everyone posted.

Silver

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

Yes I am certain they are 10 mb cards I am running 12.0 T train

ps the media type command is 4000 series specific

Re: Cisco 3640 10Mbps to Catalyst 2900xl switch errors

To me, when one writes: 12.0 mainline, I assume one means the -GD- releases. So lets say I misunderstood. When you are running on a T-version this confirms the posting of mr Sjouw. This means that it is very likely that it also works in 12.1 and it definitely is IOS-related.

It may in turn help you to know that it is NOT implemented in 12.0(x) GD

Cheers
