Hi
I need to change my Catalyst 6500 at my DR site.
Here are the module I have inside :
Mod Slot Ports Module-Type Model Sub Status
--- ---- ----- ------------------------- ------------------- --- --------
1 1 2 1000BaseX Supervisor WS-X6K-SUP1A-2GE yes ok
15 1 1 Multilayer Switch Feature WS-F6K-MSFC2 no ok
4 4 48 10/100BaseTX Ethernet WS-X6348-RJ-45 no ok
9 9 48 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet WS-X6148-GE-TX no ok
I am thinking of buying a 4500 Series.
However I don't know how to choose the right Supervisor and the MSFC.
Is there any supervisor card with MSFC onboard ? is a PFC always onboard ?
How do I see in the doc that the Supervisor have MSFC onboard ?
Many thanks for your guidance.
David

Could you perhaps elaborate a bit about WHY you need to change the 6500?
What are the requirements for the new switch?
Is upgrading the supervisor not an option?

Leo

We would like to change this 6500 to use the part as spare for my Primary site.
This has been budgeted so need to spend the money . Anyway.
I will install 2 1000Base Ethernet card to connect my servers, pc's and printers.
I will have a couple of static routes . I redistribute them with EIGRP. and I will learn all my companie group routes via EIGRP also from my provider router ( we use a MPLS )
nothing else
what other requirement should I be focused on ?

"what other requirement should I be focused on ?"
Just mentioning three:
-Performance
-Support for 10Gb links
-Cost (seems to be the least of your worries;-)
Still a 4500 series solution can do the job for you.

My problem is how to choose the correct Supervisor ? also are msfc always on board ?

Sorry , I would like to be more precise :
We have actually on the supervisor, an msfc card attached to get layer 3 routing protocols.
So as far as I understand , on the Supervisor doc , when they say Layer 2/3/4 services , that means the supervisor already as the capabilities of bulding routable table , correct ?

You are correct. The 4500-E with supIV or V has full L2/3/4 routing features on board. It does not need an MSFC for this because it's a totally different design. Please check the info below:
