Cisco 6509 mls & mls rp

Can anyone tell me the difference between mls and mls rp on a Cisco 6509 supervisor card?

I've noticed that the sh mls status shows global mls ipx as enabled but sh mls rp shows ipx multilayer switching as globally disabled.

Many thanks, Lee.

Maritime_Rtr#sh mls status

MLS global configuration status:

global mls ip: enabled

global mls ipx: enabled

global mls ip multicast: disabled

current ip flowmask for unicast: destination only

current ipx flowmask for unicast: destination only

Maritime_Rtr#sh mls rp

ip multilayer switching is globally enabled

ipx multilayer switching is globally disabled

ipx mls inbound acl override is globally disabled

mls id is 0006.2866.3540

mls ip address

mls ip flow mask is destination

mls ipx flow mask is unknown

number of domains configured for mls 0

Re: Cisco 6509 mls & mls rp

This is a FAQ.

6500 runs internal mls between the sup and the msfc. This is enabled by default and can't be disabled

that is what you see in the show mls status command.

Now, MSFC can also act as the MLS RP for a external switch like a cat5k with NFFC card. the show mls rp command shows you that info.

important point here is if you are trying to do mls on cat6k within itself with some commands, you are probably wasting your time as the commands are for MLS rp for an external switch. MLS is on by default.

Please refer to this documention.
